Alberta Health care coverage is changing
Effective on February 1, 2025, the Alberta Government will reduce or eliminate funding for many optometric services.
Coverage has been eliminated for some services and reduced by 32% (from 2017 levels) for others. Optometrists have not received any funding increase from the government since 2017, despite cumulative inflation of over 21% during this period.
We have subsidized these low reimbursement levels and controlled costs to allow everyone access to quality eye care. However, with reduced funding for testing and imaging and eliminating previously funded services, providing eye care services at little to no cost to our patients is no longer sustainable.

Your voice as a patient is powerful, and sharing your concerns and experiences can make a meaningful impact in bringing attention to this important matter.
For patients ages 18 and under: Alberta Health provides partial coverage for eye exams.
We strongly believe in removing any barriers to a child’s access to quality eye care. So, we will continue to subsidize visits for patients ages 18 and under, and provide eye exams at no cost. Paying for Optos retinal imaging will continue to be an option for the most comprehensive care.
For patients ages 19-64: Routine comprehensive eye exams are not covered under Alberta Health, but you may receive funding through third party insurance plans.
Note: Routine eye care, including eyeglass prescriptions and contact lens fittings are uninsured services for ages 19-64. You may be eligible for coverage of these services through a personal or employer health care plan.
For patients ages 65 and over: Alberta Health provides partial coverage for eye exams.
Alberta Health provides only partial coverage for visits for medical eye problems.
There will be an additional fee for the following visits:
- Eye or eyelid infections, abrasions, red or pink eye, pain or sudden vision loss
- Foreign body requiring assessment and/or removal
- Retinal examination and diagnostic imaging for diabetic patients
- Monitoring and treating chronic eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye disease, uveitis, keratoconus, and others
